Mission and Work

Mission

Responsibly provide high-touch support for wounded, ill, and injured American service members and their families and caregivers to fill gaps throughout recovery and reintegration to home communities, through an engaged national network.

Crossroads Program

$294k annual program spend • Provides housing and transportation to families of wounded, ill, and injured post 9/11 service members receiving extended medical care and/or rehabilitation at local military or Veterans Administration hospitals in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area. YRF provides free rental cars, hotel stays, and fully-furnished apartments to keep families together during the recovery process. During fiscal year 2019, YRF provided 80 rental cars free of charge and deeply discounted to YRF thanks to the generosity of one of our donors. YRF maintained 8 apartments for families with extended rehabilitation stays in the Washington DC area. YRF also paid for 1,542 hotel stays for families visiting their service member at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

Keystone Program

$830k annual program spend • From its beginning, YRF has paid special attention to the needs of military caregivers. Through this program, YRF provides military caregivers sanctuary, skills, and stability through monthly respite and social events, and educational and life skills training. At the end of FY 2019, we had five coordinators serving around 1,000 caregivers in five locations across the country with plans to add more locations as resources allow. The Keystone Program also works with donors to provide retreats to caregivers to provide a break from their caregiving duties, to provide training and life skills, to encourage wellness, and to provide bonding and networking with those in similar circumstances. In FY 2019, the Keystone Program provided retreats to more than 20 caregivers. YRF also has partnered with Military Bowl to provide rehabilitating and caregiver respite activities in a beautiful retreat setting on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay at Patriot Point.

Engagement Program

$333k annual program spend • YRF engages patients recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda MD and helps them escape from the monotony of hospital life by hosting on-base events like holiday parties and barbecues and off-base activities such as trips to local sporting and cultural events in the Washington, DC area.
