Mission

Provide families and children experiencing homelessness with a safe, nurturing educational environment to ensure children enter kindergarten ready to learn and parents become self-sufficient.

Education

$2.3m annual program spend • Bright Beginnings, . center-based program is a year-round program for children six weeks to five years old who are experiencing homelessness. The program supports children's progress and development through comprehensive services for children and families in the area of early learning, health, and family well-being. The overall goal of Bright Beginnings, . Is to provide children with a learning environment that helps them develop socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively towards school readiness during their program enrollment. Our comprehensive, evidence-based services are built on the key principles of individualization and partnership with parents.

Home Based

$669k annual program spend • The home based program offers services to children and their families in shelters and transitional housing programs. Many families enter the program while they await space in the center; this allows families to begin receiving bbi's comprehensive services and gives those enrolled first priority for transition into the center. During a 90-minute weekly visit, home visitors meet with parents and children in the family's home environment, coaching parents on strategies to be the child's "first teacher," screening and assessing the child, and providing family support services, including connecting families with workforce development, health, mental health, and disability services and collaborating with case managers and other service providers involved with the families.

Family Services

$476k annual program spend • Provide family services which include onsite crisis management and case management to homeless families. Specific family services include: parent services which stabilize homeless families and include as well as support parents' education, training and employment goals, key referrals to social services, parenting, health, abuse/neglect and stress reducing training.

Bright Beginnings is dedicated to meeting the immediate needs of children and families living in homelessness.

Families with young children are among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population in Washington, DC. Bright Beginnings is nationally-accredited early childhood and family learning centers that offer a bright start for infants, toddlers and preschoolers and their families. Bright Beginnings serves about 162 children every day whose families are living in crisis shelters or transitional housing. Our educational, therapeutic, health and family support services prepares these children for kindergarten and stabilizes their families.

  • Providing children with a safe, nurturing educational environment;
  • Preparing children to enter kindergarten ready to learn; and
  • Supporting parents to stabilize their home lives and become self-sufficient.

Vision Statement

Bright Beginnings will build upon a vibrant, existing, sustainable and comprehensive model for delivering educational, therapeutic and social services for infants, toddlers, preschool children and parents, which helps transition families out of homelessness. Our leadership and programming will restore and revitalize the quality of life for every child and family experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC.

Our History

Bright Beginnings, Inc. was established in 1990 by the Junior League of Washington, which identified a critical need for quality childcare among families experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. Since then, Bright Beginnings has met the needs of nearly 2,500 children impacted by the trauma of homelesness by providing families with developmental childcare and on-site therapeutic and family support services.

In 2005, Bright Beginnings launched its Early Learning Evening Care Program that is open to all working families in need of safe, reliable evening care.

In 2014, Bright Beginnings launched a Home-Based Program which sends Home Visitors to shelters and transitional housing. Home-based care offers the same high-quality early education and parenting support as in the center-based program and increases the number of children served from 89 to 162. The home visiting program at Bright Beginnings is the only Home-Based Program in the country that solely focuses on serving families experiencing homelessness.
