Reading Partners

From the CEO

Together with our schools, Reading Partners focuses on students who are at least one month behind in reading, harnessing the power of community volunteers to provide individualized instruction to help them master the reading fundamentals they need to reach grade level.

Our trained, committed community volunteers work one-on-one with these students, delivering a simple, proven curriculum each week to help the child begin to gain lost ground.

What we do

Program 1

Engaged Volunteers

Reading Partners’ unique model leverages the power of volunteers to amplify our resources for students and school communities. Our curriculum makes volunteering as a tutor with us easy and fun, and we boast a 96% volunteer satisfaction rate. Volunteer tutors commit to at least one hour a week, working with the same student throughout the year. Our tutors make a huge difference in the lives of our students and create an enormous impact in the literacy movement. This year our goal is to engage 1,690 volunteers in the Bay Area, please join us in this important work! To find out more about volunteering with Reading Partners email volunteersf@readingpartners.org.

Program 2

Our Curriculum

Reading Partners has developed a proprietary, easy-to-use, structured curriculum to help students gain the skills needed to be independent and successful readers. Our curriculum provides targeted instruction and practice of foundational literacy skills students need to move towards grade-level reading proficiency and is designed to be easily administered by volunteers. Reading Partners’ curriculum is aligned to the Common Core State Standards, other state standards, and best practices in reading instruction to promote student mastery through alignment with classroom expectations.

Program 3

Individualized Attention

Reading Partners recognizes the challenges classroom teachers face in meeting a wide variety of student needs. Our one-on-one model:

  • Provides each student with a caring coach to deliver targeted support and champion success
  • Gives each student the opportunity to work at his or her own pace and at just the right level
  • Offers personalized language support; a tutor can stop and discuss words and topics unfamiliar to his or her student as needed
  • Allows for student choice with the guidance of a trained adult

“We have everything in common! We both love pizza, we are the same nationality, and best of all, he plays fortnight just like me!” . In partnership with @goodreads we piloted a fun pen pal program between our students and employees! It has been a great way for our students to receive additional support from a mentor by sending each other letters. Recognition

"“It appears to me this great experiment in democracy is in danger of failing. Only an informed citizenry can make it work and, at this point in history, reading is still the most reliable way of staying informed. I feel a patriotic duty to do what I can to help." " --Roger, Franklin Elementary tutor

Five-Year Study Shows That Reading Partners Helps Students In Under-Resourced Schools Make Significant Reading Gains

“Given the scale of students reached by Reading Partners nationwide, it’s highly encouraging that APA has affirmed the strength of our one-on-one tutoring program,” remarked Karine Apollon, CEO of Reading Partners. “Quite simply, we are helping positively impact the literacy skills and confidence of more than 11,000 students each year at an absolutely critical point in their educational lifecycle. We believe the futures of our students can and will forever be transformed because of the important literacy boost they get by participating in the Reading Partners program.”
