Tandem, Partners in Early Learning

From the Executive Director

Tandem engages the whole community to ensure all families have the resources, skills, and confidence they need to support their children’s kindergarten readiness. We do so by meeting families and community members where they are, respecting and building upon their strengths, and supporting them to maximize their impact both in their own families and within their community.

What we do

Program 1

StoryCycles®

StoryCycles®, our school-to-home book-sharing program, provides families with young children a rich collection of high-quality, multilingual, multicultural, age-appropriate, beautiful, and engaging books that are rotated home weekly, building a love and habit of book-sharing. Educators receive on-site professional development and training, and families attend workshops on a variety of early learning topics.

Program 2

Early Learning Everywhere

Early Learning Everywhere (ELE) is our community-based work, which provides high-quality children’s books, learning resources, and customized trainings to partner organizations and other agencies seeking to embed early learning and family engagement strategies within their work. We both train the staff of partner organizations such as libraries, health clinics, hospitals, and family resource centers, and also provide workshops and activities for the families they serve.

Program 3

Literacy Champions

Literacy Champions, our parent leadership development program, engages parent leaders in a series of intensive trainings so these parents can, in turn, train other parents in their own communities on how to use everyday moments to build children’s early literacy skills. As agents of change in their own communities, Literacy Champions are actively engaged in service delivery and needs assessment and work directly with their community’s most vulnerable families to provide them with the tools to improve their children’s future.

Every month, we are fortunate to get to interview amazing authors and illustrators of children's books we love and this month is no exception! Join us on our Facebook on April 16th at 1:15pm to watch our interview with author Alexandria Giardino. Her book, Ode to an Onion, is a beautiful tribute to Pablo Neruda and his muse, Matilde and is not one to be missed! It's an especially great book to share with the kids in your life during April, which is National Poetry Month! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Curious about what it's like to be an author, how a book is made, or about Alexandria's work? We'd love to ask her your questions! Comment with questions and we'll be sure to ask her when she joins us for the interview. #earlyliteracy #earlychildhoodeducation #childrensbooks #childrensbookauthor #authorinterview #interview

Parent involvement in early years grows with help from community groups

Parent Jacqueline Reyes invited her friend Rosario Rodriguez to learn early literacy skills through the year-long program, spearheaded by Tandem, Partners in Early Learning, an advocacy organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. To become a Literacy Champion, parents are required to attend up to 10 hours of workshops during a one-to-two month period. Reyes completed those 10 hours and in addition, agreed to a year-long fellowship where she is using the skills she learned in the workshops to lead story hours in the community.
